Introduction to Arts Award at Bromley Conservatoire

The Arts Award Mission is to support children and young people to enjoy the arts, take part in the wider arts world and to develop creativity, communication and leadership skills. Arts Award is managed by Trinity College in association with Arts Council England.

Arts Award recognises a wide range of arts and cultural activities:

• Performing arts such as music, dance, drama, mime and musical theatre
• Visual arts, craft and design, such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, printmaking and fashion
• Literature, such as poetry, fiction, journalism and scriptwriting
• Digital and media, such as code, photography, film , broadcasting, web design and multimedia games design
• Heritage activities, including visits, workshops and projects with museums and heritage and arts venues
• Combination of any of these art forms

Arts Award Journey

There are five stages in the Arts Award journey: Arts Award Discover, Arts Award Explore, Bronze Arts Award, Silver Arts Award and Gold Arts Award. Broadly speaking, Discover and Explore are designed for children in Key Stages One and Two. Bronze Award can be attempted from the age of 11, so this Award and Silver Award are appropriate for children in Key Stages Three and Four. Gold Award, equivalent to an AS Level, is for students aged 16+.

At Bromley Conservatoire, we shall be starting our Arts Award journey by designing courses to facilitate children in the primary years to achieve the Discover and Explore Arts Awards.

Arts Award Discover

To pass Arts Award Discover, children are required to create an individual arts log that demonstrates how they meet the following requirements:

• Part A: Participation in arts activities
• Part B: Research into artists and their work
• Part C: Sharing of their arts discovery

Children are assessed in the following areas:

• Art form knowledge and understanding
• Creativity
• Communication

Arts Award qualifications are not allocated different grades or pass levels, so each arts log will be assessed as either Pass or Below Pass.

Arts Award Explore

To pass Arts Award Explore, children are required to create an individual arts log that demonstrates how they meet the following requirements:

• Part A: Active participation in a range of arts activities, providing a personal response about what they have learnt from taking part
• Part B: Experience of arts organisations, artists and their work
• Part C: Creativity and arts skills through making art work
• Part D: Identification of what they have enjoyed and/or achieved and their communication of this to others

Children are assessed in the following areas:

• Art form knowledge and understanding
• Creativity
• Communication
